ApartDirect expanded

ApartDirect was founded seven years ago, as a family business. Mikael Karström, owner and founder of the company, started renting out a few apartments in Hammarby Sjöstad and gained more apartments in Gamla Stan. The company eventually expanded to Älvsjö, Sveavägen, Linköping, Solna, Gröndal, Sundbyberg and the most recent aparthotel in Linköping Vasastaden.

The company is run by approximately ten staff members within support and maintenace who manage the hotel business of 460 apartments from an office in Hammarby Sjöstad, just around the corner from the apartment hotel located there. ApartDirect Linköping is run by two staff members within support and maintenance from an office in the same location as the apartment hotel, which is now counting 95 apartments for both short- and longterm rent.

Johan Möllerström has been working within the company since several years back. He handles the long-stay reservations within the company.
"I would say the main reason why we are able to handle nearly 500 apartments from one office is thanks to the friendly atmosphere and motivation among us co-workers," says Möllerström and continues: "It's important for all of us to get along, and you are sure to make a better and more efficient job when you feel comfortable in your work environment."

The business concept is simple: Affordable apartments with everything necessary for those who desire a home away from home. There is a kitchen pentry, TV, free wi-fi and other convenient necessities. These stylishly furnished apartments are rented out with focus on comfort, security and value for money. In order to strengthen these values, ApartDirect uses a smart and unique key-code system, a code which can easily be renewed from the office should the code end up in the wrong hands or be forgotten. With this concept, no guest has to be locked out of the apartment late at night due to lost keys. The apartment hotel also has surveillance cameras in all public areas to ensure guests' safety. It is simply safe, private and comfortable.

Many of the apartment hotels have just opened and recently renovated, while being maintained by ApartDirect's own maintenance team. All urgent matters are taken care of directly upon received reports, day and night, while minor matters such as extra towels are prioritized the next day. The support includes both telephone, chat, mail and mostly able to deliver a response within 24 hours.

New apartment hotel opens up in Linköping Vasastaden.

Apartment hotels are available for rent in ApartDirect Linköping Arena, but now another apartment hotel opens up in Linköping Vasastaden, only 1 km from the central station. They will be open for reservations from the 20th of December, and will be launched on the website soon.

Just like ApartDirects other apartment hotels, the rooms are equipped with flatscreen TV, free wi-fi, kitchen pentry with kitchen utensils, towels, bedsheets and washing machine. All necessities usually found in a home or a regular hotel are available when you book with ApartDirect. The main difference to a regular hotel experience is the opportunity to cook your own meals and do your own laundry, for a more convenient and cost-worthy stay. Most rooms are private studio apartments with unique keycode locks, so you do not need to go through any reception or pick up any keys. This enables a more smooth and flexible check-in and check-out procedure.

Out of human trafficking

A large part of human trafficking for sexual purposes and prostitution takes place inside Stockholm hotels. This is an issue that many hotels struggle with, how can they better prepare to handle those situations that come to light?

One way to go is collaboration with Talita, an organization that offers support and assistance to women in prostitution. ApartDirect is part of such cooperation. By supporting the organization financially, and keeping in direct contact with Talita's outreach department, ApartDirect can better handle those situations.

So what does Talita really do? Talita supports both long-term and emergency situations. The long-term work is based on a twelve-month rehabilitation program, which includes safe housing and trauma therapy. The program helps women to be safe and integrated back into society. Most emergency cases rise from police or social services that need Talita's help through safe housing for trials, and therapy. The women who come to Talita are asked if they want to be part of Talita's long-term rehabilitation program, but many prioritize returning home to their home country.

Being perhaps the work that becomes most apparent in contact with the hotel industry, is Talita's outreach department. Employers and volunteers move in street- and club environment where prostitution can occur to get in touch, motivate and build relationships with young women.

Talita writes about the porn industry as an entry point for many young girls into the sex industry:

“Over the years, Talita has witnessed a clear link between pornography, prostitution and human trafficking for sexual purposes. (...) Porn producers recruit young women continously through social media and lure them into the industry with promises of fame and glory. They use terms found in popular culture, such as “blogs” and “model jobs” which are intended to hide what kind of content is actually being produced.”

ApartDirect employee Johan Möllerström took the first initiative within ApartDirect to start a collaboration with Talita organization.

“I think these situations are inevitable to anyone who's running a hotel business. But when such a situation do come to our attention, it is important that we hand it over to Talita and the Stockholm Police department as they know better how to talk to women within this trade,“ says Möllerström. He continues: “And it is of course our hope and aim that they will find the support needed. Many of these women are very scared of authorities, out of bad experience.”

New aparthotel

ApartDirect is expanding, and opening another apartment hotel in Sundbyberg. Now located in seven locations across Stockholm, ApartDirect has central and affordable apartments for both short- and longterm rent.

The opening is due July 2019, and the last preparations are being done inside the apartments.

"We are basically doing the very last cleaning after the renovations, and putting some furnishings in place. Other than that we are soon good to go. We look forward to opening the apartments to be reserved already in July," says Joakim Ödlund, general manager.
